Pinnacle Software Ltd
1993 - 1995
Project Manager and Senior Programmer Analyst

Pinnacle Software – Software House developing and selling a complete suite of software modules in the distribution and manufacturing sectors, covering full financials, invoicing, telesales, sales analysis, inventory, purchasing, bill of materials and distribution requirements planning. Unix, C-language, Informix.

Roel’s role - Initially involved in upgrading the distribution requirements planning module. The forecasting formulae were greatly improved in the areas of seasonal items and slow movers. The addition of calculation of the standard error of each of the forecasts allowed prediction of the chance of stock shortages for any combination of reorder parameters. By minimising the forecast of lost sales given a limited purchasing budget the optimum parameters could be calculated.

Roel helped to secure a major South East Asian distributor as a new Pinnacle customer by designing a transport and route sales liquidation module. He managed the implementation of the Pinnacle system for this company being a 1400 man-day development and customisation project by a team of up to twelve people spread over three countries.

Community Pharmacy Limited
1982 - 1993
Programmer/Analyst and Project Leader

Community Pharmacy Ltd – From 1989-1993 New Zealand’s largest pharmaceutical wholesaler. The company was New Zealand distributor for several multinational pharmaceutical companies such as Merck, Sharp & Dohme, Schering-Plough, Fisons and Roussel. The company also became New Zealand’s largest supplier of dispensary and retail pharmacy systems using mainly in-house developed software.

Roel’s role - Designed and managed development and maintenance of all warehouse and head office systems as leader of a team of up to nine people. In 1993 Community Pharmacy Ltd was taken over by its major competitor who adopted the CPL systems to serve the combined company.

Major systems: (All converted from Honeywell/Bull GCOS and HVS6 using Cobol to  Unix, C-language).

Order-taking and Invoicing:
Completely redeveloped since 1989 – Unix, C-language, featuring order-taking via telephone, portable data entry units and pharmacy computers for a combination of 11 branches servicing more than 10000 products for about 1000 customers. This system has at times turned over $3.5 million of sales through more than 45000 line-items in a single day using a relatively small Unix machine.
Debtors / General Ledger / Creditors:
Interfaced with above invoicing system as well as various through times of hectic change of trading terms, upgrades and takeovers.
Redeveloped to be able to purchase 10000 lines via 11 warehouses fortnightly on-line, virtually without human intervention

D.P. Training Officer and Programmer/Analyst

New Zealands largest Forestry and Paper Manufacturing company at the time. Responsible for training of new programmers and users. Conversion of batch type costing systems to on-line what-if enquiry systems with the help of report generators.. Manufacturing, Share Registry and Sales Analysis Systems using PL-I and IMS/DL-I under DOS-VS and MVS on various IBM mainframes
